Workshop on (sub)cellular phenomena wins over participants

The workshop “Bridging the scales inside the cell” aimed to boost the exchange of new methods in theoretical biophysics between researchers. Organized in Görlitz by the Scultetus Center of CASUS, the event more than lived up to expectations.

The cell contains a plethora of length and time scales: At present, the theoretical description and modeling of intracellular phenomena requires considerable intuition. Therefore, a more systematic approach to finding the most
relevant experiments is needed to bridge these scales.

While several methods have been developed to achieve a true multi-scale or integral approach to modeling cellular behavior, the general application of these methods is limited by their availability and difficulty of use. Additionally, combining different methods could greatly expand the possibilities.

The speakers invited for this workshop not only shared the description of their methods but also discussed the implementation and gave full hands-on tutorials enabling their use. Participants in the workshop got more than just an overview: They learned the necessary tools and skills to perform state-of-the-art simulations of (sub)cellular phenomena.

The feedback from the participants was very positive as the following two reactions underline: “The workshop was one of the best I have participated in!” and “I think the whole event was a success story.”

“Bridging the scales inside the cell” was organized by CASUS’ Scultetus Center. It helps scientists to expand their interdisciplinary scientific networks and supports organizing workshops, symposia, conferences as well as summer schools on complex systems research.
