Lem Prize presented at festive ceremony

CASUS Young Investigator Dr. Tobias Dornheim awarded the Stanisław Lem European Science Prize 2024

The festive handover of the statuette crafted by Przemysław Tyszkiewicz took place in Wrocław in mid-May. Prof. Arkadiusz Wójs, Rector of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology, personally presented the award to Dornheim who introduced the invited guests to his research topic, the world of warm dense matter, with a lecture.

Dornheim was announced as the recipient of the 2024 Lem Prize already at the end of 2024. The International Prize Committee recognized Dornheim’s work on the analysis of extreme states of matter, such as those found inside planets or in fusion energy experiments, without relying on error-prone models. At the ceremony, Dornheim expressed his gratitude for the recognition and the possibility to present his work with a lecture: “It is a great honor and a distinction that will stay with me throughout my scientific career.”

The Lem Prize, worth 100,000 PLN (around 23,000 €), has been awarded at the Wrocław University of Science and Technology since 2021. It recognizes the promising work of young scientists (up to 40 years of age) studying or conducting research in the European Union and associated countries.

The Wrocław University of Science and Technology published an interview with the awardee that is well worth reading. It covers more detailed explanations of his research, his connections to Poland and his relationship with Stanisław Lem, the famous author after whom the prize is named.
