The warm dense matter (WDM) state has excited the interest of many a scientist. The research on WDM has gone from visionary predictions to failure after failure to unexpected success. This talk will cover some of the more bold predictions that started WDM research and show how these led to spectacular developments and sometimes even insights. We will demonstrate how only a combination of modern theory and the latest experimental tools gives reliabe new knowledge. Finally, we touch on some very fundamental questions that might inhibit applying WDM as created in the laboratory to astrophysical settings.
