CASUS Institute Seminar

Effectively publishing data-rich science

Andrew Hufton, Ph.D., Editor-in-Chief Patterns, Cell Press, Munich (Germany)

Abstract of the talk// Andrew will share how his journal incorporates FAIR & open science into their editorial evaluation process, and why open science plays a key role in ensuring reproducibility and promoting public trust in science. He will describe how submitting open, reproducible papers can aid consideration at any journal, and provide tips on how to draft and submit such papers in a manner that is friendly to peer-reviewers. Advice on how to share data, code and models effectively will be included. In addition, Andrew will discuss new issues and pitfalls that have arisen with generative AI technologies, and provide advice on their ethical use in research and manuscript writing.

Patterns is an interdisciplinary, open-access journal from Cell Press, that publishes data science in the broadest sense, including a wide range of computational and data-rich research, as well as associated topics in ethics, philosophy and science policy.

CV// Andrew has a passion for promoting open science and improving how we publish data-rich research. He has worked across multiple publishers and journals, currently leading Patterns and previously launching Scientific Data. During a break in his editorial career, he also worked on a science policy project studying the international sharing of genetic data from biodiversity. He received his PhD from Stanford University in 2006 and, prior to his editorial career, conducted research on topics in developmental biology and genome evolution.

Andrew will be talking live in Görlitz. Interested scientists from Görlitz and beyond are kindly invited to join the live talk. However, as the event is organized in a hybrid format that includes a videoconferencing tool by Zoom Inc., people not present in Görlitz and interested in the topic have the chance to also join.
