If you were lucky enough to have an invitation, you could experience a small robot parade in mid-June at CASUS. At this exclusive gathering young people presented the robots they had assembled themselves in the weeks before. It was the closing event of a workshop that started in March and familiarized the participants with the basics of robot mechanics, micro controller and sensor integration as well as artificial intelligence-based object recognition. The twelve trainees aged between 9 and 14 worked in four teams so that their parents and the CASUS team could witness four different robots foraying the area and detecting and avoiding obstacles while moving. Another robot could identify and pick up building bricks of a defined color.
After all teams successfully had accomplished their respective missions the kids reviewed some of the physics and computer science expertise they gained. Finally, they were awarded their workshop certificate, which they proudly showed to their parents.

The preceding workshop, which lasted several weeks, took place every other week at the Rabryka center for youth and social culture, and was led by Thomas Arlt, PhD, a data and computer vision scientist based in Görlitz. Financial support was provided by the Foundation of the Sparkasse Oberlausitz-Niederschlesien.
The workshop started with basic topics such as robot propulsion and movement. Week after week, new aspects were introduced and implemented, including smart remote control of the robots and tuning them with various environmental sensors. Given the great interest shown by young people, plans are underway to repeat the program in fall 2025. The call for applications will be published in good time on the Rabryka website.
